It’s okay to copy

It’s okay to copy someone else’s work, just don’t claim it as your own.

We learn by copying – understanding the artist’s technique can improve our own, and we understand better how the artist created the mood/feeling he/she wanted in the painting. In this example I believe the mood is captured primarily by the shapes such as the tilt of the head, the colour is mostly decorative. tell me what you think…

  1. Often the subject of someones elses painting is the initial inspiration, but colour matching, mixing and blending is the hard part for me. Copying is a good way to learn, and by asking Alan’s permission to exhibit this work I have had the benefit of his advice. The opinion of a professional is always helpful and Alan has offered me useful advice about this painting. (His is much better)
I would never claim a work I copied to be my own original work.
